By 2030, datacenters are expected to use 8% of the world’s energy and billions of gallons of water per hour. In the process, they release crazy amounts of heat and water vapor–exacerbating the greenhouse gas effect. Only a few miles away, businesses and homes pay for the very same heat and water that datacenters expel by the terawatt. This issue is too pressing and the solution is too obvious to ignore.
Physical solutions are being explored by Equinix and local district heating operators in Europe, but many companies overlook the biggest bottleneck of reusing waste heat from datacenters: the fragmented process of outreach, feasibility calculation, and implementation--lacking scalability.
